The demand for COVID-19 testing skyrocketed over the past couple of months. Efforts to meet that demand kicked into overdrive at the local, state, and federal level—to ensure all Americans have access to a test if they need one. We know it was difficult for some to get a test during the peak of that demand, but there’s now a wide variety of ways to get both rapid antigen tests and RT-PCR tests, including some new programs. Let’s take a closer look.

Thanks to a new federal program, you can now order free at-home COVID-19 tests for your family. You can order your tests directly from the U.S. Postal Service.

You can place your order by either filling out a form at covidtests.gov or calling the test kit order fulfillment helpline at (800) 232-0233. There is also an access line set up for individuals with disabilities. Find more information at acl.gov/DIAL.

Effective January 15, 2022, insurance companies are now required to cover up to eight at home COVID tests per month. So, how can you take advantage? Next time you’re at a pharmacy or store, bring the tests to the register, show your insurance card and it will be no cost to you. If your health plan does not have direct coverage, you can also file a claim with your insurance for reimbursement for the upfront cost. Just don’t forget your receipt! You can also buy tests online, but depending on your insurance provider, you may need to go the route of reimbursement for online purchases. On January 10, through a partnership with Accelerated Clinical Laboratories, we began supporting an appointment-only mass testing clinic at the Arena at the Alliant Energy Center. This clinic operates weekdays from 10am-6pm with occasional weekend availability.

The Village on Park Public Health Clinic also offers appointment-based testing options. This clinic is open Tuesday-Saturday from 8am-4pm.

There are three steps to getting your test at either of these locations: make an appointment, register online within 72 hours of your appointment, and arrive at the clinic for your appointment with the QR code you received upon completion of your registration.

While there are many testing sites in Dane County, we do have a list of trusted testing partners that we work closely with including dozens of local pharmacies. You can also request a test through your healthcare provider.

Public Health Services are available to all residents and visitors of Madison and Dane County. Citizenship is not a requirement. We provide services regardless of a person's race, color, gender/gender expression, ability, religion, sexual orientation or place of birth/place of residence.
