DERBY — The city announced it would have to cancel a scheduled Friday pick up of at-home COVID test kits, becoming one of the latest municipalities to do so.
The announcement was made over Derby’s Facebook page around 4:30 p.m. The city’s government said that the scheduled pick ups were still on up until Thursday afternoon. However the city had not indicated when deliveries are to be expected and asked residents to monitor the Facebook page for more information.
Mayor Rich Dziekan said that the city simply didn’t have them, forcing them to make the announcement.
“I prefer to have stuff in hand before we promote things. It’s happened before. Certain things... we’re going to get started, they didn’t get started and we put it out there,” Dziekan said.
The delays previously mentioned by Gov. Ned Lamont have caused other municipalities across the state to cancel their scheduled pick ups as well, all citing delays in getting the shipments on time. Lamont blamed the shipping delays on logistical difficulties getting the kits from the West Coast to the East Coast.
The kits were originally supposed to be handed out at Derby High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a first come first serve basis until supplies run out. The city was originally supposed to get 1,620 kits to hand out.
No alternative dates were listed by the city in their announcement. However, residents wishing to get tested can go to Griffin Hospital for a drive-thru test although appointments are required.
