WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau’s Public Works Department is noting that customers may notice some discolorations in their tap water as testing and collaboration continues at the new drinking water treatment plant.
Those processes will include periodic shutdowns of wells to allow for the connection of distribution pipes. Because of that the water may have elevated levels of iron or manganese, which may give the water a green or brown tint.
Water officials note that the coloration will be most noticeable on a white background, such as in a bathtub or toilet. Despite the color, the water will remain safe to use and does meet all safety standards.
The discoloration could occur over the next several weeks. The anticipated substantial completion date for the project is October 4th.

The completion date has been delayed twice due to supply chain issues and failures with hundreds of primed and coated ductile iron fittings.
