DUNDEE − It was an encouraging start for Ida's varsity volleyball team.
The Blue Streaks got an excellent look at how the team stacks up against its competition right off the bat with a round of games against the other teams in the Lenawee County Athletic Association. The league came together at Dundee Wednesday night to open the season.
Ida finished 2-2 on the night, defeating Onsted 25-21 and Hillsdale 20-25, 25-19, 17-15, but falling to Blissfield 25-17, 25-18 and Brooklyn Columbia Central 29-27, 25-19.
"Overall, we played well," Ida coach Ashley Begeman said. "I'm excited to see the growth we'll have over the next couple of weeks as some of our key players who are new to varsity get some more experience. We have a solid group with a lot of versatility and as long as we can find that trust and chemistry as a team, we'll have a successful season."
Kaylee Stein led Ida with 20 kills and 10 digs on the evening, Ryleigh Eyler finished with 40 assists and 5 aces, and Cori Kozlowski played well with 12 digs and 8 aces.
Dundee finished 0-4, falling to Hillsdale (25-22, 25-27, 15-12), Clinton (14-25, 25-18, 15-9), Columbia Central (25-12, 25-19), and Hudson (25-17, 17-25, 15-9).
Kennedy Irwin and Macy Salenbien led the Vikings offensively, while Briley Brodine played well defensively.
MILAN − Milan's girls swimming and diving team won 11 of the 12 events Wednesday as it defeated Tecumseh 136-40.
"Tough to compete on back-to-back days, but the girls performed well," said Milan coach Dan Heikka.
Individual winners for the Big Reds were Kiera Luhrs (100 free, 200 free), Sara Mitchell (200 IM), Annabelle Williams (50 free, 500 free), Emily Huelke (diving), Kamryn Stripp (butterfly), and Elaina Malach (backstroke). Milan also was first in the 200 medley relay (Hannah Brady, Rylee Mitchell, Phoebe Rhoney, Stripp), 200 free relay (Luhrs, Stripp, Mary Kate Wayne, Williams), and the 400 free relay (Rhoney, Luhrs, Malach, Williams).
Williams swam a state-qualifying time in the 50.
Milan's depth won the day. The Big Reds also were 2-3-5 in the 100 with Rhoney, Rylee Mitchell and Ginny Heikka, 2-4-5 in the 200 with Krista Cook, Iaila Nemeth and Zariah Blackwood, 2-4-5 in the 50 with Rhoney, Malach and Rylee Mitchell, 2-3 in the 500 with Cook and Lila Mckenna, and 2-3-4-5 in the breaststroke with Stripp, Heikka, Sarah Monroe and Hallie Thornton.
PETERSBURG − Jefferson's Rylee Dunn and Summerfield's Ellie Noland shared medalist honors, but the Bears slipped past the Bulldogs 200-212 Wednesday at Deme Acres Golf Course.
Dunn (47), Callie Calvin (48), Claire Conover (52), and Payton Jones (53) led Jefferson.
Noland also carded a 47. Summerfield's Delany Hoffman was second on the team with a 52, followed by Emily Simpson (56), and Cam Taylor (57).
St. Mary Catholic Central won its Huron League opener Wednesday 218-229 over Airport at Monroe Golf & Country Club.
SMCC's Gracie Gentry was medalist with a 43 and Emily Bellino scored 54.
Hannah Roof (50) and Sophie Bucki (55) led Airport.
Luis Jasso scored twice Wednesday to lead Gibraltar Carlson to a 2-1 victory over Lincoln Park.
The Marauder junior had a goal in each half. The first was assisted by Carter Sgro and the second by Aidan Malec.
Carlson improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Downriver League.
PETERSBURG − Summerfield finished 9-0 Wednesday in a quad meet at home.
Addie Spoering led the Bulldogs with 18 service aces and six kills, Sarah Prati had 12 assists and 13 aces, Mia Miller contributed 8 aces, 2 kills and a block, Mia Sample had 11 aces and 5 kills, Riley Soldwish set well with 5 assists and 8 aces, Maya Stone played well defensively and added 6 aces, and Kyra Horak played well all around.
Whietford and Hudson both went 4-5 in the quad, and Waldron finished 1-8.
